Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has uncovered a remarkable Ghanaian connection to Kyrgyzstan’s national football team during bilateral meetings with the Kyrgyz President and Foreign Minister.

The officials revealed that Joel Kojo, a Ghanaian-born striker, is celebrated as a national hero and star player for the Kyrgyz national team, the White Falcons. Kojo, originally from Juapong in Ghana’s North Tongu constituency, switched nationality to represent Kyrgyzstan and has since become their all-time top scorer. He was named Best Kyrgyz Player in 2025 and played a pivotal role in qualifying the team for the Asian Cup.

Another Ghanaian, Emmanuel Yaghr, is also making waves in the Kyrgyz local league, further highlighting the growing Ghanaian presence in the country’s football scene.

Following the revelations, Minister Ablakwa met with both players, expressing pride in their achievements and gratitude to the Kyrgyz Football Association for its warm reception and facilitation. He was presented with a customized Kyrgyz national team jersey during the meeting.

Both countries have agreed to pursue bilateral cooperation in football development, strengthening ties through sports diplomacy.
Minister Ablakwa described the encounter as a “small world moment,” noting with delight that Joel Kojo hails from his own constituency. He praised the contributions of the Ghanaian community in Kyrgyzstan and reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting Ghanaians abroad.
