Finance Ministry Pledges Stricter Controls Following Auditor-General’s Report

The Deputy Minister for Finance, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, on behalf of the Finance Minister, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has presented a statement to Parliament addressing the Auditor-General’s special report on arrears and payables as of the end of 2024.

Hon. Ampem described the findings as evidence of a “systematic plunder and abuse” of the public financial management system, stressing the urgent need for discipline and accountability in the handling of state resources. He highlighted key concerns raised by the audit and assured Parliament that the Ministry of Finance is committed to implementing stricter controls.

Among the measures outlined were full verification before payments are made, ensuring all commitments are backed by budget allocations, and holding officials accountable regardless of rank. These steps, he said, are aimed at improving transparency and safeguarding public funds.

Following debate on the statement, the First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, referred the matter to the Public Accounts Committee. The Committee has been tasked to investigate the concerns raised and report back to the House within three weeks.
