Sector Minister Inspects Cape Coast Phase II Sea Defense Project

Protecting Ghana’s 550 km coastal communities and safeguarding livelihoods from the devastating impact of sea erosion requires continuous and deliberate policy intervention, especially as rising sea levels driven by climate change continue to threaten their existence.

On Monday, the Minister for Works and Housing undertook a routine working visit to the Cape Coast Phase II sea defense project to assess progress of work.

The 5 km project, which commenced in September 2024, is designed to protect the thriving communities of Abakam, Brooyedur, Ekon, and Moree, as well as the vital Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway. Completion is scheduled for September 2028.

The Minister’s visit forms part of a broader inspection of ongoing sea defense projects across Ghana’s coastal belt. Officials emphasized that these projects underscore government’s firm resolve to deliver climate-resilient infrastructure that responds to the needs of vulnerable communities.

By reinforcing coastal defenses, authorities aim to preserve livelihoods, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure long-term resilience against the worsening impacts of climate change.
