After being involved in an accident on Sunday, nine students from the University of Education in Winneba were confirmed dead, while numerous others were injured.
A Hyundai Universe commercial bus was involved in the collision, which occurred on the Accra-Kumasi route in Asuboi, a neighborhood of Suhum.
After the bus they were riding from Sunyani to Accra collided with a stationary articulated truck, the incident occurred.
Because he was apparently sleeping, the driver of the bus with the registration number AK324-22 is said to have broken traffic laws.
“On-the-spot investigations at the section of the accident spot at Asuboi on the Accra-Kumasi dual carriage road indicated that the driver of the said commercial bus failed to observe traffic ahead whilst he was allegedly sleeping”.
The impact of the crash caused a 40-footer truck filled with wood to fall onto the road, killing eight people instantaneously.
According to the Eastern Regional Police Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Police have began an investigation into the incident.
He added that the injured persons are receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital whilst the dead bodies have been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.
“In the process, he crashed into a 40-footer container loaded with wood which fell partially on the road as a result of a previous accident. The passengers who sustained the injuries have been transported to the Suhum Government Hospital and are receiving treatment whilst the dead have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy,” he said.
