More than 24,000 pieces of basic medical equipment have been distributed to primary healthcare facilities across Ghana to strengthen the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme, Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced.
Speaking at a community durbar at the Fian Health Centre in the Daffiama Bussie Issa District of the Upper West Region, the Minister disclosed that 5,000 healthcare bags containing essential equipment had already been delivered, with an additional 5,000 bags and 7,000 motorbikes and tricycles expected in the coming weeks. These logistics, he explained, will enable health professionals to provide services directly in homes, churches, mosques, and communities, with a strong focus on prevention and early detection.
Residents will benefit from routine screening for conditions such as high blood pressure and high blood sugar, with referrals made for further care where necessary. The Minister emphasized that the initiative represents a shift from a hospital‑based approach to one rooted in community health delivery.
Hon. Akandoh stressed that FPHC services are available free of charge at CHPS compounds, health centres, and polyclinics, covering treatment for common conditions including malaria, diarrhoea, and respiratory infections. He urged communities to embrace preventive care and make full use of the programme’s services.
The distribution of equipment forms part of Government’s broader effort to ensure that quality healthcare is brought closer to the people, reinforcing President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2027.
