The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has announced the commencement of payments to households enrolled under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme, marking a new phase in Ghana’s flagship social protection initiative.
The Ministry confirmed that payments began nationwide on Monday, September 14, following a comprehensive reassessment and reset of the programme to strengthen fairness, transparency and accountability. The exercise reviewed household circumstances to ensure that support reaches the poorest and most vulnerable families, while allowing households whose conditions have improved to transition out of the programme.
Government has set a target of 450,000 beneficiary households, with payments being rolled out in phases. Officials emphasized that beneficiaries who do not receive funds immediately should remain patient, as enrolment and disbursement will continue across districts in the coming weeks.
The LEAP Programme provides regular cash transfers to extremely poor households to help meet basic needs, improve food security, and promote access to health and education. The Ministry reiterated that no fees or commissions are required for enrolment or payment, urging the public to report any demands for unauthorized charges through official grievance channels.
Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, assured beneficiaries of Government’s commitment to strengthening LEAP as a more targeted and responsive intervention. “This reset marks an important stage in making LEAP better aligned to Ghana’s poorest households. We call on all stakeholders to support efforts to protect the integrity of the programme,” she said.
The Ministry also acknowledged the cooperation of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, civil society organizations and frontline officers who have supported the reassessment and enrolment process.
With payments now underway, Government says the reset of LEAP will ensure that social protection reaches those who need it most, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to inclusive development.
