The Minority Caucus in Parliament has announced it will not participate in a scheduled meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee until the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides full disclosure on the expenditure incurred during the evacuation and reintegration of Ghanaian nationals.
The Caucus explained that while it supports government’s decision to evacuate citizens affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa, it insists on accountability regarding the reported GH₵50 million spent on the exercise.
In a statement signed by Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Minority noted that despite a formal request under the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), the Ministry has yet to provide an itemized account of the expenditure, funding sources, and supporting documentation. The request, submitted on 25th August 2026, sought detailed records to ensure transparency in the use of public funds.
The Minority emphasized that accountability is critical to maintaining public trust and warned that it will not engage in closed‑door deliberations without the requested information. The statement urged the Ministry to uphold transparency and provide the necessary documentation before the Committee’s meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 16th September 2026.
The Caucus reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the public interest, stressing that parliamentary oversight must be exercised to ensure that government actions, even in emergencies, remain consistent with principles of transparency and accountability.
