The Government of Ghana has announced that a state funeral will be held in honour of the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, one of the nation’s most distinguished diplomats and statesmen.
According to a statement from the Presidency Communications, the ceremony will take place at the forecourt of the State House on Friday, July 31, 2026, in collaboration with the Gbeho family and related families.
Ambassador Gbeho’s career spanned decades of service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he rose through the ranks to become Chief Director, Deputy Minister, and ultimately Minister for Foreign Affairs. His international contributions included serving as the United Nations Secretary‑General’s Special Representative in Somalia and later as President of the ECOWAS Commission.
Government described him as a stellar public servant whose dedication advanced both Ghana’s diplomacy and Africa’s regional integration. “His Excellency James Victor Gbeho rendered distinguished national and international service,” the statement noted, while extending condolences to his family.
The state burial is expected to draw dignitaries from across Ghana and abroad, reflecting the breadth of his influence and legacy in diplomacy and governance.
