A fire outbreak at Takoradi makeshift market in the Western Region has razed down several stores, according to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 2 am but got out of hand after several attempts to extinguish the flame proved futile.
The market was put up for traders of the Takoradi Market Circle to temporarily accommodate them while the main market is reconstructed.The incident, which happened in the early hours of Monday, destroyed properties worth thousands of cedis. Report reaching Baina Tv indicates that It took the National Fire Service over five hours to bring the fire under control and stop it from spreading to other parts of the market.
some eyewitnesses blamed the severity of the fire on the inaccessibility of the area. Some traders also commended the Fire service personnels for doing a great job. However, other market women explained that the fire got intense because the roads were blocked with goods making it difficult for the Fire men to get there on time.
Meanwhile, the Western Regional Minister, who doubles as the Acting Municipal Chief Executive of Takoradi, Kwabena Okyre-Darko-Mensah has, visited the scene after the fire was brought under control.
He said the assembly, as a matter of urgency, will ensure the reconstruction of the affected stores within this week.
