Bekwai Circuit Court Jails Robbery Convict 25 Years

The Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man, Dominic Ofori, also known as Fanta, to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour for his role in a violent robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso, Ashanti South Region, in 2022.

Ofori, who had been on the run for nearly four years, was arrested on February 16, 2026. He pleaded guilty to robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and was handed the custodial sentence.

The incident occurred on March 20, 2022, when police intelligence revealed that armed men from Manso Abodom were planning to attack a mining site to seize gold concentrate. Acting on the tip-off, the Manso Adubia District Police mounted a surveillance operation and laid an ambush.

At about 5:30 p.m. the same day, four armed men stormed the site, fired indiscriminately, and robbed miners of their gold concentrate. Police officers intervened, leading to a gun battle. Three suspects—Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi—sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on arrival at St. Martins Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum. Ofori managed to escape but was later apprehended.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued resolve to clamp down on violent crime and ensure offenders face justice.
