The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a large consignment of suspected Indian hemp during a marine patrol on the River Volta, officials confirmed Friday.
According to a statement from the Command’s Public Affairs Unit, the Marine Police Detachment at Ada, while on routine patrol at Tuaniikopey Island around 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, intercepted an outboard‑powered wooden canoe loaded with 29 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The occupants abandoned the vessel and fled upon sighting the police.
A search of the canoe revealed 2,213 slabs of the dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape, alongside 14 gallons of pre‑mixed fuel and two Yamaha outboard motors. The seized items have been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters for further investigation.
The Tema Regional Police Command has launched efforts to identify and apprehend the individuals who abandoned the canoe. Authorities have cautioned the public against engaging in narcotic trafficking and urged anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the vessel to report to the nearest police station.
The release, signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs, emphasized the Command’s commitment to intensifying patrols and dismantling networks involved in the transportation of illicit substances across Ghana’s waterways.
