President John Mahama has announced the conferment of “The Order of the Companion of the Volta” on the Engineer Corps of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) during the country’s 70th anniversary next year.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces announced this during the handover ceremony of the Right-of-Way clearance at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region on Monday, 14 September 2026.
The National Honour is in recognition of the Military Engineers’ dedication to duty and excellent work in clearing the Right-of-Way for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway in 19 weeks.
He said the feat showed the Armed Forces’ capacity to contribute to national infrastructure development beyond its traditional security responsibilities. President Mahama said, “A grateful nation must recognise great accomplishment,” lauding the sterling achievement of the GAF Engineers.
The Engineers had exceeded their initial mandate by clearing 183.6 kilometres against the 175.6 kilometres assigned. The project was an opportunity to revisit history and reclaim the age-old recognition of GAF as a formidable partner in national development, reliving memories of its accomplishments in the Afram Plains and Sefwi Wiaso some decades ago.
The successful completion of the exercise has reaffirmed the GAF’s capacity to support national development through its engineering capabilities and other related fields.
