The Government of Ghana has signed a Letter of Intent with Japanese confectionery giant Meiji Holdings Co. Ltd. to strengthen cooperation on the sustainable development of Ghana’s cocoa industry and advance circular economy initiatives.
The agreement was formalized at the Meiji Milk Chocolate 100th Anniversary Commemoration and Partnership Event held in Accra. Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu‑Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, signed on behalf of Ghana, while Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hiroshi Yoshimoto, signed for the Government of Japan. The Chief Executive Officer of Meiji Holdings initialled on behalf of the company.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Meiji presented Ghana with 10,000 cacao bioplastic ballpoint pens, symbolizing the company’s appreciation for the country’s longstanding partnership and friendship.
In her remarks, Hon. Ofosu‑Adjare congratulated Meiji on reaching its centenary milestone and conveyed Government’s best wishes for the company’s continued growth and success. She emphasized that the cooperation would reinforce Ghana’s efforts to modernize its cocoa sector while promoting sustainability.
Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Hon. Dr. Julius Debrah, urged relevant institutions to work closely together and maintain a strong focus on delivery. He noted that Meiji’s gesture was received in the spirit of friendship and partnership between Ghana and Japan, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing shared development goals.
The Letter of Intent marks a significant step in Ghana’s drive to build a resilient cocoa industry, enhance value addition, and integrate circular economy practices into national development.
