Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has called for renewed efforts to make the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system faster, more reliable and more attractive to commuters as part of measures to decongest Accra’s roads.
The Minister made the call during a working visit to the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) to assess its operations and explore practical interventions to improve urban mobility.
Hon. Ayariga stressed that the Aayalolo service must provide commuters with a clear advantage over private vehicles by offering faster and more predictable journeys, particularly during peak hours. He proposed exploring dedicated lanes for Aayalolo buses on selected major routes during peak periods, subject to technical assessment and consultations with relevant stakeholders.
He noted that addressing traffic congestion would require a broader approach involving efficient public transportation, improved urban planning, alternative road networks and greater investment by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Reaffirming Government’s commitment, Hon. Ayariga said the development of efficient and sustainable urban transport systems remains a priority to improve mobility, reduce congestion and enhance the quality of life of citizens.
