Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and institutional collaboration with the presentation of the Democracy Cup trophy to the Ghana Armed Forces.
The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, handed over the trophy to the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. The ceremony formed part of Parliament’s broader initiative to strengthen ties with the Armed Forces and promote democratic values through sports.
The presentation also served as an official invitation to the Chief of the Defence Staff to witness the highly anticipated Democracy Cup clash between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Mr. Djietror explained that the initiative was designed to foster a healthy relationship between Parliament, the Armed Forces, and the people of Ghana, while securing the support of the military in ensuring effective security before, during, and after the match.
Receiving the trophy, Lieutenant General Agyapong pledged the Armed Forces’ full support to guarantee a safe and successful event. He noted that Parliament’s gesture reflected respect and appreciation for the Armed Forces’ contribution to national development and stability.
The Democracy Cup, conceived under Speaker Bagbin’s leadership, has become a symbolic platform for promoting national unity, strengthening institutional partnerships, and highlighting the importance of democratic governance. Ahead of Friday’s match, the trophy will tour key state institutions and offices, building momentum toward what is expected to be a historic encounter.
