AMA Orders ‘Aboboyaa’, ‘Pragya’ Operators to Install Reflectors, Stay Off Inner Lanes by August 31

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed all tricycle and auto‑rickshaw operators, popularly known as ‘Aboboyaa’ and ‘Pragya’, to install reflective stickers on the back and sides of their vehicles by August 31, 2026, as part of new measures to improve road safety and visibility.

Announcing the directive at a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, also instructed tricycle riders to wear reflective clothing while operating on the roads.

He further ordered operators to stay off the inner lanes of major roads, restricting them to service or side roads where available. In areas without service roads, tricycles will be required to keep strictly to the outermost lane.

Mayor Allotey explained that the measures were intended to make riders and their vehicles more visible to other road users, particularly at night, in order to prevent crashes. He stressed that the directive formed part of broader efforts to promote discipline, safety, and order on Accra’s roads.
