GRIDCo Reports Major System Disturbance, Begins Power Restoration

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed that a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line early Thursday disrupted electricity supply across parts of the country.

According to a statement issued by GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Section, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 20, 2026. The fault triggered the automatic shutdown of Akosombo’s generating units and some thermal plants, a protective measure designed to safeguard the integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.

The sudden outage left several communities without power. GRIDCo engineers, working alongside other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and began restoration efforts.

“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement noted.

GRIDCo expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that technical teams have been fully mobilised to achieve complete restoration. The company pledged to provide further updates as work continues.

The outage underscores the vulnerability of Ghana’s power infrastructure, which relies heavily on the Akosombo hydroelectric facility and interconnected thermal plants. GRIDCo has urged patience and cooperation from the public as engineers work to stabilise the system.
