WITHDRAWAL OF SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM CAUSES ABSENTEEISM IN SCHOOLS

Some schools in the Ledzokuku Municipality have started recording low attendance due to the suspension of the school feeding program.

Caterers of school feeding program have halted their services due to the government’s inability to meet their demands.
Withdrawal of service is necessitated by delay in payment in grants and calls for increments of grants from 0.97 pesewas to 3 Ghana cedis per child.

Pupils are no more served with one hot meal in a day since the beginning of the second term. Schools have started recording low attendance because parents can’t afford the lunch of their wards.
Madam Patience Adams-Brown, School Health Education Programme Coordinator, Bedrock Municipal Education Directorate, says that most public basic schools in the area were recording absenteeism and overfeeding issues since school reopened.

Meanwhile, Mr. Siiba Alfa, Head of Public Relations, Ghana School Feeding Programme, said the caterers would be settled by the end of the month.
He said they had processed the data and submitted it to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department for payment of the arrears.
