We’re proud of Sosu – Hikah Benson

The Director of the Center for Conflict, Human Rights and Peace Studies (CHRAPS) at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. George Hikah Benson, has expressed his excitement and pride at the performance of the Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu, following the MP’s introduction of Private Member’s Bill.

The Private Member’s Bill seeks to amend the Criminal Offence Act 1960 (Act 29) and Armed Forces Act 1962 Act (105) to substitute the death penalty for life imprisonment and provide for related matters.

Dr. Benson, who is also a former Upper West Regional Minister, made these remarks at a Stakeholder Meeting to consider the proposed amendments titled Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2022 and Armed Forces (Amendment) Bill, 2022 at Parliament House on Monday, April 11, 2022.

If passed, Ghana would have eliminated about 90-95% offences carrying Death Penalty with exception to treason and High Treason which are entrenched provisions in the 1992 Constitution.

Currently, countries such as neighbouring Sierra Leone, Benin, Guinea, Cote D’Ivoire, Senegal, Togo, Chad and Malawi, among others, have all abolished the Death Penalty.
