President Mahama Rewards UDS with GHC500,000 for Historic Football Achievement

President John Dramani Mahama has handed over a GHC500,000 monetary package to the University for Development Studies (UDS) in recognition of their outstanding triumph at the FISU World University Football Championship in China.

UDS etched their name in history as the first African university to secure the global title. The victorious side paid a courtesy visit to the President at the Jubilee House, where they proudly displayed the trophy.

During the meeting, President Mahama disclosed that government is creating a School Sports Authority to supervise and promote sports development from the basic school level through to the tertiary stage.

“My government, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ministry of Education, is working to strengthen youth and university sports systems to ensure that talented students or athletes are identified, developed, and supported to reach professional levels,” President Mahama stated.

“We are setting up the School Sports Authority which will concentrate on sports from the basic level to the secondary level to the university level.”

UDS captured worldwide attention after pulling off a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in the final. Despite conceding a goal within the opening 10 seconds, skipper Mohammed Sulemana equalised in stoppage time, before Ezedeen Alhassan sealed the win with a spectacular finish from a corner in extra time.

The triumphant team touched down in Ghana on Sunday, October 5, where they were met with a jubilant reception at the Kotoka International Airport.
