The Ghana Police Service has arrested three suspects believed to be part of a criminal syndicate that uses taxi cabs to steal mobile phones and other valuables from unsuspecting passengers.
The suspects — Sasu Lawrence, also known as Agbe, Richard Osei, and Charles Kofi Nti, also known as Survivor — were picked up on 12th January 2026 in an intelligence-led operation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the group operates mainly in the early hours of the day, posing as taxi drivers in search of passengers. Two suspects sit in the front seats while one positions himself at the back. Once a victim, often women, boards the taxi, the suspects allegedly lock the doors to prevent them from alighting. In the ensuing struggle, the suspect seated at the back pretends to assist but instead steals the victim’s mobile phone or wallet.
Police say the suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations. Efforts are also underway to track down individuals who receive and trade in the stolen items.
The Service has urged the public to remain vigilant when boarding taxis, especially during early hours, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
