A member of Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, has urged the Asunafo South District Assembly to employ night drivers to support emergency fire response operations within the district.
Hon. Awuni, who is also the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, suggested that the Assembly could utilise its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to finance the engagement of the drivers to ensure the availability of personnel during emergency situations.
She made the appeal when the Asunafo South District Assembly appeared before the Committee to present its 2025 Annual Statement submitted through the Audit Committee.
According to the MP, the lack of dedicated drivers at night could hamper the timely deployment of fire tenders and other emergency response services, particularly during critical incidents that require immediate intervention.
She therefore encouraged the Assembly to explore practical measures to guarantee round-the-clock emergency response capacity and improve public safety.
The public hearing formed part of the Committee’s oversight responsibilities and brought together representatives of Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) from the Eastern and Ahafo Regions.
The engagement provided a platform for the Committee to assess governance, financial management and service delivery performance across the participating local government institutions while addressing operational challenges affecting effective administration.
Hon. Awuni’s recommendation is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and enhance fire safety services within the Asunafo South District and other local assemblies across the country.
