President John Dramani Mahama has announced a decisive government operation to evacuate the massive accumulation of waste at Agbogbloshie, describing the exercise as critical to restoring sanitation, protecting public health, and reclaiming the area for productive use.
The operation, expected to last 90 days, will deploy DRIP equipment including tipper trucks, excavators, bulldozers and wheel loaders, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces, private road contractors, metropolitan and municipal assemblies, and other state institutions. Officials estimate that about one million tonnes of waste will be cleared and transported to the Adepa Engineered Landfill Site.
President Mahama said the reclaimed land will pave the way for the proposed Agbogbloshie Urban Land Renewal Project, which includes plans for an Industrial Park and a major textile factory to create employment opportunities for young people. He directed that measures be instituted to prevent the site from becoming a dumping ground again, stressing the need for sustained enforcement, reliable waste collection and responsible disposal practices.
The initiative forms part of a broader nationwide waste management programme, which includes the provision of household waste bins, additional transfer stations, engineered landfill facilities and expanded recycling capacity.
The President called on residents, traders, motorists, businesses and other stakeholders to cooperate with the teams undertaking the exercise. “This is about restoring sanitation, dignity and environmental safety to Agbogbloshie,” he emphasized.
