Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the evacuation of accumulated waste from the Jamestown area to the Adepa Waste Management Centre in Nsawam will begin next week.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, September 10, the former Majority Leader said preparations are already underway, with regional coordinators mobilising trucks from across the country to support the exercise.
He explained that the coordinators from the various regions have been brought to Accra to coordinate the deployment of trucks and ensure that the evacuation begins within the government’s one-week deadline.
Mahama Ayariga said he has also briefed President John Dramani Mahama on the arrangements and expects the President to be present to officially launch the exercise once the trucks are ready.
“By next week, I am very confident that the evacuation of the waste from the Jamestown site will start.
“I’ve told the President, I mentioned to him at Cabinet yesterday, that I’m trying to get them on site so that by next week he comes to commission the exercise,” he said.
The planned evacuation forms part of efforts to address the growing waste accumulation at Jamestown, where the build-up of refuse has raised concerns about sanitation and public health.
