High Court Grants GH₵30 Million Bail to Abu Trica

The High Court has granted bail of GH₵30 million with two justified sureties to Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, in a major development in his ongoing extradition case.

The ruling, confirmed by his lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor in a Facebook post on Tuesday, comes after months of unsuccessful attempts by the defence to secure his release while contesting the legal basis of the proceedings.

Background to the Case Abu Trica, a Ghanaian social media personality and businessman, was arrested on December 11, 2025, in a joint operation involving Ghanaian and United States law enforcement agencies. He is accused of being part of an international cybercrime syndicate that allegedly defrauded elderly victims in the US of more than $8 million through romance scams.

According to an unsealed indictment, he faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy, offences that could carry up to 20 years in prison if proven in a US court. Investigators claim the group used artificial intelligence tools to create fake online profiles to deceive victims.

Extradition Proceedings Following his arrest, Abu Trica was arraigned before the Gbese District Court in Accra as part of extradition proceedings initiated by US authorities. Two co-accused — Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo — were later cleared after prosecutors reportedly found no evidence against them.

His defence team argued that the withdrawal of charges against the co-accused undermined the conspiracy case against him. They subsequently filed multiple applications, including judicial review and certiorari motions, seeking to quash the District Court proceedings and halt the extradition process.

Public Attention and Debate The case has drawn widespread public interest due to Abu Trica’s high-profile social media presence and displays of wealth prior to his arrest. Allegations that his lifestyle was funded by cyber fraud have fueled debate, with supporters calling for his release and critics stressing the need for accountability.

Significance of the Bail Ruling Legal analysts say the bail decision marks a turning point, granting the defence more room to pursue constitutional and procedural challenges outside custody. The conditions attached to the bail, including reporting requirements and possible travel restrictions, are expected to influence how the case unfolds in the coming months.
