The government is set to meet with the transport unions today, February 11,regarding proposed fare hikes in response to the ongoing rise in fuel prices.
This discussion comes amid growing concerns from commuters and transportoperators about the financial strain caused by fluctuating fuel costs and their effect on transportation services across the country.
The move follows a statement from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), one of the country’s largest transport unions, which has
indicated thatthe threshold for fare increases has been reached due to consecutive fuel price hikes throughout January. The GPRTU explained that
the ongoing surge in fuel prices, combined with rising operational costs, has made it financially unsustainable for commercial drivers to
maintain the current fare structure without adjustments. In a press briefing on Monday, February 10, the Minister for Transport, Joseph
Nikpe Bukari, assured the public that the government is committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to reach a fair and balanced resolution. He expressed confidence that a reasonable pricing structure could be established to address the concerns of both transport operators and passengers.
