The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to providing comprehensive reintegration support for nationals evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks.
Welcoming the final batch of forty-one (41) evacuees at the Accra International Airport on Friday, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, assured returnees that government assistance would extend beyond their safe arrival. He was accompanied by Ambassadors, Directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and officials from partner institutions.
The evacuation exercise, which began in May 2026, concluded with nearly 1,900 Ghanaians safely returned home. Each evacuee received reintegration packages including financial support, transportation allowance, medical care, psychosocial services, free health insurance registration, and ongoing employment assistance.
Hon. Ablakwa disclosed that evacuees’ details would be compiled into a comprehensive national database to facilitate access to social support systems, skills development programs, and scholarship opportunities. He emphasized that these interventions are designed to help returnees rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s national development.
Encouraging the evacuees to remain hopeful, the Minister assured them of government’s determination to improve the country’s economic conditions and create more opportunities for all citizens.
“This exercise is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. Government will continue to stand by you as you reintegrate and rebuild,” he stated.
