The Government of Ghana has successfully concluded the evacuation of its nationals affected by recent xenophobic attacks in the Republic of South Africa, with the arrival of the final batch of forty-one (41) evacuees at the Accra International Airport on Friday.
Welcoming the group, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed profound gratitude to all institutions and individuals whose support ensured the safe return of nearly 1,900 Ghanaians. He commended the coordinated efforts of the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria, the National Disaster Management Organisation, Ghana Red Cross Society, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Health Service, Port Health Authority, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
The Minister singled out the Church of Pentecost in South Africa for providing shelter and essential support to stranded nationals awaiting evacuation. He also acknowledged the contribution of AirtelTigo, which distributed free SIM cards with call credits to all evacuees, easing communication during their transition.
“This exercise has been a testament to Ghana’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of its citizens, no matter where they find themselves,” Ablakwa stated, assuring that reintegration measures are underway to support returnees.
The arrival of the final batch marks the end of a months-long evacuation operation, which began in May 2026. The government has pledged continued assistance to evacuees as they settle back into their communities.
