The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, will today hold a press briefing to present a comprehensive account of Ghana’s evacuation of nationals from South Africa, following the recent wave of xenophobic attacks.
The briefing, scheduled for Monday, September 7, is intended to provide full transparency to the people of Ghana on the operation, which concluded last Friday with the arrival of the final batch of forty-one (41) evacuees at the Accra International Airport. In total, nearly 1,900 Ghanaians were evacuated between May and September 2026.
Government reports indicate that evacuees received reintegration packages including financial support, transportation allowance, medical care, psychosocial services, free health insurance registration, and ongoing employment assistance. The Minister explained that the decision to facilitate their return was taken after his visit to South Africa, where he personally assessed the situation and interacted with affected nationals.
Hon. Ablakwa lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to the welfare and protection of Ghanaian citizens abroad. He emphasized that the exercise demonstrated the high premium government places on the lives of Ghanaians everywhere, sending a clear message that no citizen will be abandoned in harm’s way.
The Minister also extended condolences to the families of the four Ghanaians who lost their lives during the period of unrest, assuring them of the nation’s prayers and support.
