Ghanaian PhD students in the United Kingdom under the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat sponsorship have petitioned the Ghana High Commission in London over prolonged delays in the payment of tuition fees and stipends.
In a letter dated July 30, 2026, the UK PhD cohort referenced an earlier petition submitted on January 20, 2026, which outlined a five-point demand for resolution. The students say none of the issues raised have been addressed, despite assurances from officials during a meeting at the High Commission in April.
The petition expressed frustration at the lack of communication regarding the release of the first quarter budget, noting that the delays have left many students in financial distress. The executives of the cohort indicated that the unresolved concerns have compelled them to organize a protest to draw further attention to their plight.
The letter, signed by the cohort’s executives and copied to UK and Ghanaian media outlets, emphasized that the scholarship delays threaten academic progress and undermine Ghana’s commitment to supporting higher education abroad.
The students urged the High Commission and the Scholarships Secretariat to act swiftly to resolve the matter, stressing that timely disbursement of funds is critical to sustaining their studies and upholding Ghana’s reputation in international academic circles.
