Ghana has secured the lifting of restrictions on the export of eggs to Burkina Faso and the importation of tomatoes, marking a breakthrough in bilateral trade relations between the two countries.
The agreement was reached following urgent engagements in Ouagadougou led by Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu‑Adjare, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, and Hon. Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture. The Ministries assured the Ghanaian private sector — particularly poultry and egg exporters as well as tomato importers — that the outcome reflects government’s commitment to protecting the interests of traders and producers under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
It would be recalled that Burkinabe authorities recently imposed restrictions on egg exports from Ghana, especially those originating from Dormaa, citing precautionary measures linked to quality concerns in some exporting countries.
Both sides agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee to ensure smooth bilateral trade and address future issues promptly. They also committed to negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement to strengthen relations, reduce barriers, and improve market access for goods and services.
During the discussions, Hon. Ofosu‑Adjare announced Ghana’s participation in this year’s International Arts & Crafts Trade Fair (SIAO) in Burkina Faso, with a high‑level delegation showcasing Made‑in‑Ghana products and services.
The Burkina trade corridor remains one of the fastest‑growing in the sub‑region, with Ghana’s exports to Burkina Faso rising from US$573 million in 2024 to US$637 million in 2025.
The Ghanaian delegation included HE Sem Kenneth Akibate, Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, chancery officials, technical staff of the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, and private sector representatives such as Dr. Ernest Appiah, Managing Director of Agricultural Manufacturing Group (AMG), and Sylvester Asante, Chairman of the Dormaa Egg Exporters Association.
Both sides reaffirmed their determination to ensure that trade between Ghana and Burkina Faso remains unhindered, pledging to build on this engagement in the interest of traders, producers, and consumers in both countries.
