Foreign Affairs Ministry Seeks Details on Alleged Discrepancies in South Africa Evacuee Payments

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested detailed information from the Multimedia Group regarding allegations of discrepancies in the disbursement of reintegration and transportation grants to Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa.

In a letter dated October 26, 2026, and signed on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs by the Chief Director, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, the Ministry said it had taken note of allegations made by Mr. Isaac Kofi Agyei, identified as the Head of Research of the media organization, during Joy FM’s Newsfile programme aired on October 24, 2026.

According to the Ministry, Mr. Agyei claimed to have spoken with and verified reports from three evacuees who allegedly received only GH¢2,000 out of the GH¢5,500 announced by the Government as reintegration and transportation support for each evacuee.

The Ministry further referenced allegations that approximately 40 evacuees received the GH¢5,000 reintegration grant but did not receive the additional GH¢500 transportation allowance.

Another allegation cited by the Ministry relates to claims that some payments were made without beneficiaries signing the required acknowledgement records, although their names allegedly appeared alongside signatures in the Ministry’s payment records.

The Ministry described the claims as serious and said they warranted thorough investigation because they raise concerns about the integrity of the disbursement process and could adversely affect the reputation of the institution and officials responsible for administering the payments.

It stated that the allowances and reintegration packages were publicly announced before the evacuation exercise commenced and indicated that, to date, it had not received any complaints from evacuees concerning shortfalls in the payments.

The Ministry noted that the allegations surfaced approximately five months after the evacuation exercise and said it considered it necessary to verify the claims. It also pointed out that the media house had not contacted the Ministry to verify the allegations before they were made public.

To facilitate investigations, the Ministry requested the names and contact details of the three evacuees who allegedly received GH¢2,000 instead of GH¢5,500, as well as the identities of the approximately 40 evacuees said to have received only the reintegration grant without the transportation allowance.

Additionally, it requested particulars of any evacuees alleged to have received payments without signing the corresponding acknowledgement records.

The Ministry said the information would enable it to engage the affected individuals, examine payment and acknowledgement records, and objectively investigate the allegations.

It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the fair examination of the issues raised and expressed hope that the requested information would be provided to support a thorough fact-finding process based on verifiable evidence.

The letter was addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of the Multimedia Group, with a copy sent to the News Editor of the organization.
