FDA Moves Against Unhygienic Fish Handling Practices

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has taken swift action following a viral video that exposed smoked and salted fish being processed under unhygienic conditions in parts of the country.

A rapid response team, working in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service, was dispatched on Monday, July 27, to confiscate fish exposed to unsafe environments. The FDA said the processors involved were educated on the public health risks associated with such practices.

According to the Authority, further engagements will be held with fish processors and mongers in coastal districts to promote hygienic handling and safeguard consumer health.

Advice to Consumers

The FDA has urged the public to:

  • Buy fish from hygienic sources
  • Inspect fish carefully before purchase, avoiding products with offensive odours, unusual colours, or signs of spoilage
  • Wash and cook fish thoroughly before consumption
  • Report unhygienic practices to the nearest FDA office or local assembly

The Authority assured the public that unsafe fish and fish products will be removed from the market, while education and enforcement activities are being strengthened.

Public Safety First

“The FDA remains committed to protecting public health and safety. We urge consumers to remain calm and adhere to food safety practices,” the statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer noted.
