Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo, has assured consumers that tomato prices are expected to fall sharply in the coming weeks as local farmers begin harvesting across the country.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Hon. Dumelo disclosed that government is actively preparing for large‑scale dry season tomato farming to run from December 2026 through June 2027. He noted that lands in the Northern Region have already been cleared, with nursing and transplanting scheduled to commence in October.
To support this initiative, the Ministry has provided farmers with solar‑powered boreholes and irrigation inputs to enable year‑round cultivation. According to the Deputy Minister, these measures are designed to augment supply and prevent shortfalls in the next production cycle.
“The prices of tomatoes should see a sharp decline these coming weeks as Ghanaian farmers have started harvesting,” he stated, emphasizing that the dry season programme will further stabilize the market.
The announcement comes amid heightened public concern over rising food costs, with government positioning agriculture as a key pillar in its broader food security strategy.
