CAGD Pays Promotion Arrears to Over 56,000 GES Teachers

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,033 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), bringing relief to thousands of educators who had been awaiting the settlement of their outstanding claims.

According to a statement issued by the department, 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, 2026, together with their October salaries. The payments covered salary adjustments and arrears from January 2026. An additional 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026.

The CAGD said the payments were completed ahead of the October 16 deadline agreed upon between government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on October 2, 2026.

The department disclosed that out of about 80,000 promoted teachers captured by the GES, supporting documents for 56,633 teachers were processed and submitted for verification. Of that figure, payments were made to 56,033 teachers, while 630 cases remain pending due to issues identified during the verification process conducted by the CAGD.

The statement indicated that the affected cases would be paid after the identified challenges are resolved by the Ghana Education Service.

Meanwhile, 23,367 promoted teachers are yet to be processed, with the department awaiting the submission of the necessary documentation from the GES.

The CAGD assured teachers that it remains committed to settling all outstanding promotion-related payments once the required payroll documentation is received and successfully verified.

The department further expressed appreciation to the Ghana Education Service, teacher unions, and the ministries and agencies involved for their cooperation in facilitating the payment process.

The payment of the arrears is expected to ease concerns among affected teachers and fulfil commitments made by government and education sector stakeholders regarding the outstanding promotion-related claims.
