Interior Minister Postpones Security Services Recruitment After El Wak Tragedy

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has announced a rescheduling of the nationwide recruitment exercise for the security services, moving the start date from Saturday, November 15, to Monday, November 17.

The announcement, made on Friday, November 14, comes in the wake of the tragic incident at the El Wak Sports Stadium during the military enlistment process.

According to the Interior Minister, the recruitment for the Police, Immigration, and Prisons Service will now begin on Monday, with a revised timetable to be shared through national newspapers, official social media channels, and the relevant ministries and agencies.

“The application process will begin on Monday, November 17, 2025. It will be published in the national dailies, on the Ministry and its Agencies’ website, and on social media platforms.

There are two major channels to purchase application vouchers; from any GCB Bank Branch nationwide, or conveniently from home via USSD dial code. The details of the web address and the USSD short code will be in the publication. The system we are deploying is a robust centralised E-Recruitment Portal, an initiative implemented to ensure harmonisation and standardisation of the conduct of recruitment across the various agencies under the Ministry of the Interior,” he explained.

The El Wak incident left 28 applicants affected, with 12 in critical condition, five admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, and six confirmed dead. Meanwhile, a separate recruitment exercise in Kumasi also reported five injuries.

The Ministry has assured citizens that enhanced safety protocols will be introduced to prevent similar occurrences, while investigations into the tragedy remain ongoing.
