Akwatia By-Election Slated for September 2

The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled Tuesday, September 2, 2025, for the parliamentary by-election in the Akwatia constituency, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the Commission cited Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates that a by-election be conducted within 60 days of a parliamentary seat being declared vacant.

Nomination documents for interested candidates will be accessible for download on the EC’s official website from July 30 through August 13.

Completed nomination papers must be submitted in person at the EC’s Demkyembour District Office between Monday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 13. The office will accept submissions daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and again from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Each candidate’s nomination must be supported by a proposer, a seconder, and 18 registered voters from the Akwatia constituency. Additionally, candidates are required to provide two recent passport-sized photos and four copies of the filled nomination forms.

The filing fee has been set at GH¢10,000 for male contenders, while female candidates and individuals with disabilities will pay a discounted fee of GH¢7,500.

EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa urged all aspirants and political actors to adhere strictly to the outlined procedures and deadlines to ensure a fair and orderly by-election.
