GACL Reclaims 16 Acres from McDan After High Court Ruling

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) says it has successfully repossessed more than 16 acres of strategic land near the Kotoka International Airport following a landmark ruling by the Accra High Court in its favour.

The judgment, delivered on May 6, 2025, granted GACL full possession and re-entry rights to two parcels of land measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres. The properties, situated near Action Chapel International and adjacent to the airport, had been occupied since 2012 by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, subsidiaries of the McDan Group of Companies.

GACL initiated legal proceedings in February 2025, citing continuous breaches of lease agreements and failure by the McDan entities to pay ground rent. The company sought recovery of $26,296 in arrears and a perpetual injunction to bar further encroachment on the land.

The court granted all reliefs requested by GACL, including a GH¢50,000 award in legal costs, after the company filed for summary judgment on the basis that the defendants had no valid defence.

This legal win comes months after tensions between GACL and McDan Aviation, which had its operations at Terminal 1 suspended in December 2024 due to outstanding debts, though those were later settled. However, the land dispute persisted until the court’s ruling.

“The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and lawful management of public property,” the source noted.

The success has been attributed to coordinated efforts between GACL’s Legal Department and the leadership of Managing Director Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, who has spearheaded a broader agenda to recover key assets and promote operational transparency.

GACL is expected to consider new development options for the recovered lands, including potential aviation infrastructure expansion or public-private partnerships to enhance revenue and airport services.
