The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has extended its Pink October breast cancer awareness and screening campaign to Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region as part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare in mining communities.
The exercise, organised by GoldBod’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Special Intervention Programme Units in collaboration with the District Health Directorate, offered breast cancer screening and health checks for HIV, hypertension and blood sugar levels.
Residents, including students of Diaso Senior High School, also received education on breast cancer prevention, the importance of early detection and demonstrations on how to perform breast self-examinations.
Speaking at the event, the Head of GoldBod’s Special Intervention Programme Unit, Gloria Precious Ankomah, reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of people living in mining communities across the country.
She said the initiative was also aimed at recognising the invaluable contribution of mining communities to Ghana’s economic development and ensuring that residents have access to essential healthcare services.
According to her, the campaign seeks to bring healthcare services closer to residents while encouraging regular health screening and early medical intervention, particularly for breast cancer.
The outreach programme forms part of a nationwide campaign targeting women in six mining communities to raise awareness about breast cancer and improve access to screening services.
Beyond breast cancer screening, the exercise provided participants with an opportunity to undergo general health assessments, enabling early detection of other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and HIV.
GoldBod said the initiative underscores its commitment to corporate social responsibility and community development, particularly in areas that contribute significantly to Ghana’s gold production.
The Board expressed optimism that increased awareness and access to screening services would lead to early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and other health conditions, ultimately improving health outcomes in beneficiary communities.
The campaign is expected to continue in other selected mining communities as part of GoldBod’s broader efforts to promote public health and enhance the wellbeing of residents in mining areas nationwide.
