President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Engineer Regiments of the Ghana Armed Forces for completing the clearing of the Right‑of‑Way for the 198.7‑kilometre, six‑lane Accra–Kumasi Expressway in just 19 weeks — one week ahead of schedule.
In recognition of their exceptional service, the President announced that the Engineer Regiments will receive the Order of the Companion of the Volta at the next National Honours ceremony. “Their dedication and efficiency have set a new benchmark for national service,” he said.
President Mahama further disclosed that Government has set aside $2 billion to finance the expressway project, with the full amount expected to be available by 31 December 2026 without recourse to borrowing.
He also revealed plans to return to Kwaso before Christmas to break ground for construction, describing the expressway as a major step towards transforming Ghana’s transportation network. “This project will not only ease travel between Accra and Kumasi but also unlock new opportunities for trade, agriculture, industry, and economic activity along the corridor,” he emphasized.
The completed expressway is expected to significantly improve the movement of people and goods between Ghana’s two largest cities, strengthening regional integration and boosting productivity nationwide.
