President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Government has secured $2 billion to finance the construction of the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, a landmark project aimed at transforming Ghana’s transport infrastructure.
Speaking at a public event, the President disclosed that the funds have already been set aside in a special account at the Bank of Ghana, underscoring Government’s readiness to commence work on the 198.7‑kilometre, six‑lane highway. “The money is ready and sitting in a special account at the Bank of Ghana,” he affirmed, assuring citizens that financing will not be a barrier to delivery.
The expressway, which will link Ghana’s two largest cities, is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic activity along the busy corridor. Officials have emphasized that the project will serve as a catalyst for trade, industry, and regional integration, while creating tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in construction, engineering, transport services, and ancillary businesses.
President Mahama described the initiative as long overdue, noting that Accra and Kumasi — the country’s most populous and commercially vibrant cities — have for decades been connected only by a single carriageway. “This is going to change,” he said, stressing that the new expressway will meet modern engineering standards and position Ghana as a competitive hub for commerce and investment.
The announcement follows preparatory works already undertaken by the Ghana Armed Forces Engineer Corps, who cleared the Right‑of‑Way in record time. Government has indicated that ground‑breaking for the project will take place before the end of the year, marking the start of one of the most ambitious infrastructure ventures in Ghana’s history.
