GES Dismisses False Claims on Free SHS Cancellation

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly refuted reports circulating on social media alleging that the Director‑General has cancelled the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and directed parents to pay GH₵1,500 for chop boxes and trunks.

In a statement dated 18th August 2026 and signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, the Service described the claims as “false and should be disregarded.” It stressed that the Free SHS policy remains intact and no directive has been issued requiring parents or guardians to make any payments for items.

“The Director‑General of GES does not have the power to cancel a policy,” the release noted, urging parents, guardians, students, and the general public not to make any payments to individuals or groups purporting to act on behalf of the Service.

GES further advised the public to rely only on official communications issued through its authorised channels. It cautioned media organisations and individuals against publishing or circulating misinformation capable of causing unnecessary anxiety among families and students.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in the implementation of government education policies, underscoring that the Free SHS programme remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s education system.
