The Ministry of the Interior has strongly condemned the assault of an arrested person while in police custody, describing the incident as unlawful and unacceptable.
In a statement issued in Accra, the Ministry expressed concern that the assault followed inflammatory remarks linked to a religious dispute, including calls for violence against persons accused of offending religious sensibilities. It stressed that no allegation of wrongdoing justifies assaulting a suspect in custody, as such persons are under the protection of the State.
The Minister for the Interior has directed the Inspector‑General of Police to investigate how civilians gained access to the suspect, identify and discipline any police personnel who may have facilitated the breach, and take immediate steps to arrest and prosecute those involved in the assault. Supervising officers responsible for custody are also to be investigated and sanctioned where culpable.
The Ministry emphasized that all persons arrested in connection with the dispute must be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law, without fear or favour.
“Religious incitement, religious violence and the unlawful assault of persons in custody have no place in Ghana,” the statement declared, reaffirming government’s commitment to public order, protection of rights, and peaceful coexistence among citizens of all faiths.
