The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that eleven people lost their lives and thirteen others sustained injuries in a multiple‑vehicle collision on the Ofankor–Pokuase stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Thursday, August 13.
The accident, which occurred around 4:00 a.m. between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave, involved seven vehicles — two tipper trucks, two Sprinter buses, two saloon cars, and a tricycle — carrying a total of 24 occupants.
The injured victims were transported to the Achimota Hospital for medical care, while emergency teams from the Amasaman Fire Station and GNFS headquarters were deployed to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
Speaking to Channel One News, DO1 Emmanuel Bonnie stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
In a related incident at the Ofankor Barrier, a violent collision between a tipper truck and a Sprinter bus left the vehicle mangled and several passengers trapped under the wreckage. Emergency responders worked to extricate survivors and provide immediate assistance.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS, “the rescue team worked to extricate victims from the mangled vehicle and transport those with serious injuries to medical facilities.” A female passenger whose legs were reportedly severed was among those evacuated by ambulance.
The accident caused significant disruption to traffic along the highway, with sections temporarily restricted to allow emergency crews to operate.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.
