The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed profound sorrow over the fatal accident that claimed at least 15 lives at Birimso Bridge on the Accra–Kumasi Highway, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need to address longstanding safety challenges on the corridor.
In a statement signed by Hon. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member of the Roads and Transport Committee, the Caucus extended condolences to bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. “We share in the grief of the affected families and stand in solidarity with all those impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy,” the statement noted.
The Minority emphasized that far too many lives have been lost on the highway and urged government to prioritize completion of ongoing sections, including bypasses and outstanding works. While acknowledging the US$1.7 billion earmarked for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project, the Caucus argued that approximately US$300 million would be sufficient to complete existing works that could save lives immediately.
“The long-term vision of constructing an expressway is commendable, but the immediate priority should be to complete the existing highway that can save lives now,” the statement stressed.
The Caucus called for expedited action, describing the matter as a national urgency, and urged government to balance preparations for the expressway with swift completion of current projects to reduce recurring fatalities on the critical transport corridor.
