The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed shock and dismay at the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Madam Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).
Madam Attionu, who was extradited from the United States in June, had been convicted in April 2024 on 78 counts including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and breaches of the Public Procurement Act. She was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour, with the trial court citing financial losses amounting to GH₵90 million.
In a strongly worded statement, the NPP described the acquittal as a “travesty of justice” and evidence of a politicised judiciary. The party argued that overturning such a conviction “defies logic, law, and common sense,” and undermines years of investigative work by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the trial court.
The NPP further accused the Attorney-General of orchestrating politically motivated legal maneuvers to free individuals affiliated with the governing party, warning that the development erodes public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
Party officials pledged to pursue every lawful avenue, including a possible review at the Supreme Court, to ensure accountability for those accused of plundering the public purse.
“The fight against corruption cannot and must not be a partisan convenience. Ghana deserves better. The public purse belongs to the people, not to any political party,” the statement concluded.
