The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested 19 suspected illegal miners in a decisive operation at Mpohor Fiase, following reports of galamsey activities taking place alarmingly close to the community’s police station.
According to JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor, illegal mining has become deeply entrenched in parts of the Mpohor Fiase District, with miners operating openly near security installations. This prompted calls from residents, affected farmers, and traditional leaders for urgent government intervention.
The Operation
Responding to these appeals, the NAIMOS Task Force, after reconnaissance of the area, launched a stern operation on Wednesday, July 29. The team targeted two major illegal mining sites before extending the exercise to several smaller ones.
During the raid, the Task Force destroyed 16 chanfang machines, nine water pumps, and three makeshift structures used to support mining activities. An excavator discovered at one of the sites was rendered inoperable after critical components were removed.
Seizures and Arrests
In addition to the arrests, personnel seized a pump-action shotgun with four rounds of ammunition from one suspect. Another suspect was found with GH¢120,000 in cash. All suspects and confiscated items have since been secured for investigations and further legal action.
NAIMOS Commitment
NAIMOS emphasized its resolve to sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling illegal mining networks and safeguarding Ghana’s land and natural resources. The Secretariat reiterated its call for individuals engaged in galamsey to desist and urged the public to support national efforts by providing credible information to the appropriate authorities.
