The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced that the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) experienced a major power system disturbance at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday, 29th July 2026, resulting in widespread interruptions in electricity supply.
According to GRIDCo, the incident was caused by the simultaneous tripping of several generating plants across the national power system. The company has since activated its established system restoration procedures, with engineers and system operators working continuously in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore supply safely and quickly.
A comprehensive technical investigation has also commenced to determine the precise cause of the event. GRIDCo assured the public that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
In a statement issued by its Corporate Communications Section, GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused and expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of customers during the period. “We remain fully committed to restoring supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” the company noted.
GRIDCo, incorporated in 2006 and operational since 2008, is responsible for the economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from wholesale suppliers to bulk customers and distribution utilities across Ghana and West Africa. It currently transmits electricity to 31 bulk customers and distribution utilities from 11 wholesale suppliers, including the Volta River Authority.
