The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is providing ongoing consular support to Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, who was detained on May 10, 2026, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam under a United States extradition order.
According to Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Mission in The Hague has taken up the matter and is coordinating with the MP’s family, legal representatives, and Dutch authorities to ensure that he is treated in line with internationally recognized standards and that his rights are not violated.
Minister Ablakwa disclosed that he personally visited Hon. Frimpong on May 24, 2026, during a consular engagement in The Hague. “I can confirm that he was doing quite well when I engaged him, and I had the opportunity of interacting with his lawyer during the visit,” he stated.
The issue also featured prominently during the visit of Dutch Minister for Justice and Security, H.E. David Van Weel, on July 21, 2026. Minister Van Weel assured that the Dutch government remains committed to due process and will ensure that Hon. Frimpong’s rights are respected throughout the proceedings.
The Ministry emphasized that it will continue to monitor developments closely and provide necessary assistance to safeguard the welfare and rights of the detained Ghanaian legislator.
