President John Dramani Mahama has won a pledge from African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to place the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa on the agenda of the next AU Summit.
The assurance came during bilateral talks on the sidelines of the AU Extraordinary Summit in Accra, where President Mahama underscored Ghana’s concern for its citizens and other Africans affected by the violence.
“Sweeping the matter under the carpet will not resolve the root causes,” the President stressed, adding that bringing the issue before the AU would give South Africa a fair platform to respond and allow the continent to pursue lasting solutions together.
President Mahama emphasized that Ghana harbors no ill will toward South Africa but cannot ignore the pain and losses suffered by its nationals. His intervention follows Ghana’s decision to airlift citizens home amid escalating violence and a formal petition to the AU Commission demanding action.
Officials say the move reflects Ghana’s broader commitment to dialogue, solidarity, and collective solutions that safeguard African lives and investments. “Africa’s strength lies in our unity,” the President noted, positioning Ghana at the forefront of efforts to protect the ideals of Pan‑Africanism.
